How can it only be Tuesday?! We have had a busy start to our week. The Avery County Airport is hopping – helos, planes, trucks, ATVs, volunteers, all working in unison for a common goal. Distribute donated goods as quickly as possible to those in need.
Today we achieved a large goal of ours in meeting local representation that share our values and our mission. We understand that supplies will be needed for a long time, with some areas not expected to get their power back on for 2–3 months. The churches and community centers play a crucial role in providing space to keep supplies for longer than a two-week sprint. Our concern has been people will take what they need for a day or two, and donations will slow, while the demand still exists much longer. We are committed to remaining an active participant for months, if not years. This is not a simple rebuild, it is not a normal disaster. These areas are challenging, and the people are complex. They like their space, their privacy and their way of life. They do not simply want to leave and are generally slow to trust. We love this area and earn their trust. We aren’t storm chasers ready to move on to the next disaster.
THANK YOU for continuing to support us well into our second week. The support, both locally and internationally, is heart-warming and motivating.
